Nameservers and your DNS zone

We run our own nameserver system on two independent servers. If we host your domain's DNS, you edit its records in the portal, and the records your hosting and mail need are added by us.

Our nameservers

ns1.carbonhost.hu
ns2.carbonhost.hu

Set both at your domain's registrar. Domains registered with us point at them by default.

Which domains can we host DNS for?

DNS comes with your services. We can serve a zone for a domain that is a verified name on one of your hosting sites or that you registered with us, and that has a live, paid service behind it.

Moving DNS from another provider

You can create the zone once the domain points at our nameservers. This is how to move without downtime:

  1. Save your current records. Most DNS providers offer a zone file to download; if yours does not, write down every record. Do not delete anything at the old provider until the move is complete.
  2. Change the nameservers at your registrar to ns1.carbonhost.hu and ns2.carbonhost.hu. If you registered the domain with us, do it on the Domains page.
  3. Create the zone on the DNS page with Add a zone. A nameserver change takes a few hours to reach us. If the zone cannot be created yet, the error shows where the domain points right now; wait a little and try again.
  4. Load the records with Import zone file. Before importing, a preview shows what would be added and what would change.
  5. Check your website and mail. The change usually spreads across the internet within 1 to 48 hours, and some visitors are still served by the old provider in the meantime. That is why every record must stay in place there until then.

On import, the SOA record and the zone's own nameserver records are left out, because we set those. Records that serve your hosting and mail are not replaced either: a file from your previous provider would point them back at the old server.

Delegation status

The DNS page shows, for every zone, whether the domain is delegated to us and what your registrar currently publishes. Check again repeats the lookup at any time. If somebody changes the nameservers at the registrar, it shows here too.

When the service ends

If the last live service behind a zone ends, the zone keeps working and stays editable for at least 30 more days. After that it keeps answering, frozen, for a while before it is withdrawn. That gives you time to move it elsewhere.
