Creating and using databases
Hosting sites come with MariaDB, the MySQL-compatible server that WordPress and most PHP applications use. Where the portal offers it, PostgreSQL is available too.
A new database
- Open the site and go to the Databases tab.
- Enter a short name (for example
wp). It may contain lowercase letters, digits and underscores only, up to 24 characters. - Click Create.
The full name starts with the site's identifier, for example example_com_wp. The user has the same name. How many databases you can create depends on your plan.
Password
The password is generated for you and shown when the database is created.
- It is stored encrypted, so you can look at it again later with the eye icon on the card. Every reveal is recorded in the activity log.
- New password gives you a new one at any time. The old one stops working immediately, so update your application's settings afterwards (
wp-config.php, for example), or the site cannot reach the database.
Connecting from your application
You need four things, all on the card: the database name, the user, the password and the Server. For MariaDB the port is 3306. Always use the server name on the card. The card also gives you a ready-made PDO connection string if your application asks for one.
For security, the database can be reached only from the hosting site, not from the internet. If the card shows a phpMyAdmin button, it signs you in to the database's management interface in one click, with no separate password, and you can import and export there.
Deleting and restoring
After Delete database, the website loses access immediately, but the data is kept for 30 days. Until then Restore brings the database back; after that it is gone for good.
Storage
Databases share your storage allowance with your files. Once it is full, you cannot create a new database until you free up space.
