Registering and transferring domains
You can register a new domain with us, or bring an existing one over from another registrar. Domains are billed annually, and we add the nameservers and DNS management.
Registering a new domain
- Search for the name you want on the Order page. The search shows whether it is free and what it costs.
- Choose how many years to register it for.
- Place and pay for the order.
Registering needs a phone number in international format on your profile (for example +36 30 123 4567). A new domain is set up on our nameservers.
.hu domains
- The .hu registry asks for an identifier of the holder: an identity document number from an individual, a tax number from a company. You can enter these on the Profile page.
- The registry publishes the holder's details of a .hu domain; there is no WHOIS privacy for .hu.
- Domains with accented letters (such as
kávé.hu) can be registered under .hu.
Transferring a domain to us
- At your current registrar, turn off the transfer lock and ask for the auth code (EPP code).
- On the Order page, for the taken name, choose Transfer it from another registrar and enter the code in Auth code (EPP code).
- Pay for the order.
Your current registrar has to release the name, so a transfer can take a few days. The domain keeps working unchanged in the meantime. We keep the auth code sealed until the transfer request goes out, then delete it.
If you are bringing the domain's DNS over too, read Nameservers and your DNS zone first.
Managing a domain
On the Domains page, click the domain:
- Auto-renew: the domain renews automatically before it expires. Turned off, it may be lost at expiry.
- Transfer lock: while it is on, the registry refuses to move the name elsewhere even if somebody gets hold of the auth code. Keep it on.
- Nameservers: change them here; the change is passed on to the registry as well.
- Your own nameservers (glue): if you run the domain on nameservers inside the domain itself (
ns1.example.com, say), give their addresses here. - DNSSEC: see DNSSEC.
Moving a domain elsewhere
- Turn off the Transfer lock.
- Get the code with Show the auth code. We ask the registry for it and do not store it; the reveal is recorded.
- Give the code to the new registrar.
Only hand the auth code to someone you really want to give the domain to: with it, the name can be moved away.
A domain cannot be deleted. If you no longer need it, turn off auto-renew and let it expire.
